Working Abroad?
Know Your Rights as a
U.S. Employee Overseas.
In today’s global workforce, many U.S. citizens take on exciting assignments abroad—whether with American or foreign companies. But international postings, especially in regions like the European Union and Asia-Pacific, often come with legal risks and unexpected challenges. If you're working overseas, it’s essential to understand how U.S. employment laws may still protect you.
At Sipio Law P.C., we help U.S. citizens navigate the complex legal landscape of international employment—so you can focus on your career, not the legal fine print.
U.S. Employment Laws Can Travel With You
Under U.S. law, protections against workplace discrimination and harassment can extend to U.S. citizens working abroad for American employers or their affiliates. After the Supreme Court’s decision in EEOC v. Arabian American Oil Co., Congress amended Title VII of the Civil Rights Act in 1991 to make those protections clear. As a result, U.S. citizens employed overseas by American companies are covered by Title VII (42 U.S.C. § 2000e(f)). Similar protections apply under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This means if you experience discrimination while working in Europe, Southeast Asia, or East Asia, you may have legal remedies under both U.S. law and the laws of your host country. We work closely with your local counsel abroad when needed, and we help you determine where and how your claim can be pursued—whether in a U.S. District Court, a foreign tribunal, or both.
Issues with a Foreign Employer in the U.S.?
We also represent U.S.-based employees pursuing claims against foreign companies operating in the United States. These cases often involve jurisdictional rules, cross-border treaties like the Hague Convention, and Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation (FCN) treaties. Whether you’re overseas or stateside, we bring experience and clarity to complex international employment disputes.
Facing a Contract Dispute or Wrongful Termination Abroad?
From surprise contract changes to wrongful termination while working internationally, we offer strategic legal support every step of the way. We take the time to understand your situation, explain your rights, and build a plan to protect your interests—whether you’re working in London, Singapore, Tokyo, Berlin, or beyond. If you’re a U.S. citizen working abroad and facing an employment-related issue, contact us today. We’re committed to protecting your rights—wherever your career takes you.
